The problem of stray dogs and cats in Thailand

There are activities all around Thailand to get rid of this problem in a caring, responsible and loving manner. On the other side still the dogs are poisoned by the government or hotel owners and die a horrible death, freaking out the tourists, that are witnessing their death on the beach or even under their breakfast table.
rn
rnThere is one specific web site of The Dog Rescue Center in Kho Samui, Thailand that not only helps dogs but saves cats too, and German Brigitte is the driving force working side on side with dedicated people and this article is about the shelter she helped to establish.

They are all very committed people working for the shelter, they turn their pockets inside out, if a special case requires it, without being paid for their time and efforts, they bring relieve to the suffering of these animals that are left outside, unsheltered, sick of all the parasites and starving.

Activities to improve this misery, are hopefully increasing, after the honorable act of His Highness, The King of Thailand adopting a stray female dog, called Khun Thong Daeng in 1999. She was accompanying him even to the New Year celebration 2008 that was broadcasted on TV and the dog did not leave his side. Caring, responsible and a loving attitude could resolve the problem of neglected and mistreated animals world wide. But we have to start somewhere - why not in Kho Samui?.

Kho Samui, being an island, deals with multiple barriers to help those stray animals. Transportation of larger amounts of medicine and cages are topped with the price of transportation from the mainland to the island, which makes it less affordable. Vets are rare and for Thai standards very expensive and even more expensive on the island than they are on the mainland. A sterilization costs € 30,- in Kho Samui. Considering that a Thai earns average 7 Euro a day, makes us realize that it is not only an attitude problem but also a financial problem.

The project in Kho Samui is only sustainable through the help and assistance of kind hearted volunteers that want to see the misery for these animals to end. Idealistic spirits that know that bad situations can be improved only by direct action.

The animal shelter does a lot of good work and takes care of sick dogs and cats without the direct help of a vet simply to save money and out of necessity. The core-staff is well trained by a Vet that worked for the shelter for more than a year but he also cheated them.

Reductions for the treatments seem to be out of the question at the local Vet clinics who profit from the shelter as a steady client greatly. I assume the idea that one has studied to gain a certain prestige position, weights heavier than to invest time to resolve a problem. Those Vets grew up under these conditions and it's obvious that they do not seem to be affected by the misery of the animals, as it is business as usual. Let's hope that there is an exception that proves the rule.

Question is: "Should therefore animals suffer and we are next to it and look the other way because it is not our country and not our problem? I do not thinks so, because we are in the position to help. It takes only € 15,- a month and a little dog in return is given "a life", which it would not have, if you would indeed look the other way.

So, if you are busy with your study to be a Vet one day and want a fruitful and satisfying project for your vacation as a base for your studies and really want to help a hand to create a better world, the people in Kho-Samui running the shelter would be very grateful and would very much appreciate your generous offer to help.

Or another possibility: adopt your own dog or cat, it is less expensive than the batteries of your Tamagotchi! It breathes, is full of life and feels hurt and joy and you can provide that it has an acceptable dog- or cat-life. Yes you can cuddle it or even take it for a walk, when traveling to Kho Samui to visit the dog shelter! The dogs are exceptional sweet and are grateful for the smallest attention and care.

» Contact details are on their web site with lots and lots of info but also with heart breaking pictures but also photos that give hope.
